Sometimes you just have to accept that people are daft.
Not all people. I’m sure you’re not one of them, and neither am I.

But consider this, you want to go to Facebook. So you know Facebook exists, hell you’ve probably been there more times than you can remember, so why the hell would you search for it on Google, Yahoo or Bing?
I’ll tell you why some daft people do.

They joined this thing called the internet and installed some software onto their PC that was sent to them by their ISP.
This software installed a customised version of Internet Explorer, or it set IE to open the ISP’s home page as soon as the machine connects to the internet.
This page contains a search box.

The alternative is their “IT Consultant” who knows everything about computers, and is probably the bloke down the pubs next door neighbours brother in laws 12 year old kid, set their browser start page to Google, or Yahoo, or Bing. So that’s the first thing they see when they connect.

I’ve seen what happens next a number of times, and most recently while on the phone to a client it happened again.

Instead of typing facebook.com into the browser address bar, they type it into the search box.

“Why did you do that?”
“That’s what I always do” is the reply.
When I point out the error of their ways the usual response is that they thought it was the right thing to do, and had never noticed the address bar at the top of the browser.

Stuff like that artificially inflates these statistics. People aren’t really ‘searching’ for Facebook. They’re just not as clever as the rest of us.

Facebook is ‘most searched’ brand of 2010 – Digital Lifestyle – Macworld UK: “”

Facebook new groups feature rife with abuse: “”

The new Groups feature, set up so a small group of friends can have a discussion away from the regular news feed, has a rather nasty sting in the tail.
Keep an eye on your Facebook pages. One of your “Friends” could easily subscribe you to a group without your permission. You wouldn’t even receive an email notification.
You will only be notified if and when you are logged in to Facebook.

From the Facebook Help Centre

“Can I prevent people from adding me to a new group?”.
The functionality of approving a group membership is not available. Similar to being tagged in a photo, you can only be added to a group by one of your friends. When a friend adds you to a group, a story in the group (and in News Feed for Open or Closed groups) will indicate that your friend has added you to a group.

    Please keep in mind:

        * Only your friends can add you to groups.
* When a friend adds you to a group, you’ll get a notification right away.
* You can leave a group anytime. To do so, just go to the group page and click “Leave Group” in the right-hand column. Once you leave a group, you can’t be added by anyone else unless you explicitly request to be re-added.

Choose your Facebook friends wisely.

“There are, of course, complications, which leave the geolocation- and local-services start-up community with plenty of questions about how much of their data they will have to share with Facebook if they tap into the new APIs. And additionally, Facebook’s tendency to garner bad press with regard to privacy may make some of them wary of getting involved.”

Facebook needs to understand that it’s users are increasingly concerned about privacy on the web, and what Facebook does with their personal information.

You’re probably aware of the term, I certainly hope you are. Phishers intend to steal your identity, usually by way of social engineering. They often try this with emails pretending to be from your bank for example, and directing you to a fake site using a similar URL to the genuine website, which asks for your internet banking login detals.
Lately the phishers have been targeting users of Facebook and more recently Twitter. You can read about the Facebook scams on the Facebook blog here.
Twitter users are hit with a vanity promise. The sole purpose of many Twitter users is to get as many followers as possible, so getting a tweet along he lines of “OMG I just got over 1000 followers today from http://twittercut.com.” would be irresistible.
The website in that link asks for your Twitter credentials. Do that and you will probably lose access to your Twitter account as the Phishers will change your login details.
You might ask why these scammers want your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Well apart from using them to further spread their Phishing attempts across those networks using your accounts, who knows what personal information they can get about you from your settings that wouldn’t otherwise be visible. Facebook holds a lot of personal information if you give it to them. It’s not too late to delete or change some of that. According to my Facebook profile for example, I’m almost 100 years old, not quite true, and I don’t live anywhere near where they think I do. You really don’t have to be too truthful with your profile, and that applies to much of the Social Web.
Be careful what you tell the world about yourself, and be careful what you click on.
